Blog EntryNODAME CANTABILENov 6, '08 2:14 AM
for everyone

Karagdagan dito, may kahalagahan kanilang sinematograpiya.

UP did not participate in the THES-QS university rankings
Friday, October 17, 2008

In the 2008 university rankings recently released by the Times Higher Education Supplement (THES) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), the University of the Philippines rose from 398 in 2007 to 276 this year. Ateneo de Manila University rose from 401-500 to 254. De La Salle University was ranked 415th and the University of Santo Tomas was ranked 470th.

This is the third year that such a survey has been conducted and its results given prominence by local dailies. But according to UP Vice President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, UP has never agreed to participate in this survey. In fact, this year, President Emerlinda R. Roman did not even receive an invitation to be a part of it. Nor did she receive any questionnaire to answer.

What she did receive was an email message from QS Asia Regional Director (Asia Pacific), Mandy Mok, informing her that UP had “gone up in the rankings” for 2008. The email also contained an invitation to buy “an attractive package” from THES-QS. The “package price,” which includes a banner on topuniversities.com, a full page full color ad in Top Universities Guide 2009, and a booth at Top Universities Fair 2009, amounts to $48,930.

Since UP was not invited to participate and therefore had not provided any data, UP officials do not know where and how the figures were obtained on which the ranking was based, Hidalgo said.

“UP can hardly be expected to spend more than 2 million pesos on publicity for itself involving a survey conducted by an organization that refuses to divulge where it obtains its data,” she added.

In 2007, UP was invited to participate in the survey, but when THES-QS refused to explain where it obtained the data used to determine UP’s rank in the 2006 survey, university officials decided not to accept the invitation to be part of the 2007 survey. In 2006, UP was ranked No. 299, and Ateneo was ranked No. 500.

UP wrote THES-QS in July 2007, informing them of UP’s decision not to be a part of the survey; and again in September 2007, requesting the organization to respect UP’s decision. In response, research assistant Saad Shabir wrote back saying that if it did not receive the information it would be “forced to use last year’s data or some form of average.”

Surveys and rankings obviously have their usefulness. But, as the National University—status officially granted to it with its new Charter on its centennial year—UP feels that before it agrees to participate in such an exercise, it must carefully examine the indices by which it is to be evaluated. It also needs to be convinced about the reliability of the methodology used in the exercise.

The THES-QS ranking is supposedly meant to serve as “the definitive guide to universities around the world which truly excel.” In evaluating institutions it computes half of the index based on its reputation as perceived by academics (peer review 40%) and global employers (recruiter review 10%). Since it does not specify who are surveyed or what questions are asked, the methodology is problematic.

In an earlier statement released in August this year, and carried by several national dailies, UP said: “Even peers require standardized input data to review. But according to the International Ranking Systems for Universities and Institutions: A Critical Appraisal, published by BioMed Central, the Times simply asks 190,000 ‘experts’ to list what they regard as the top 30 universities in their field of expertise without providing input data on any performance indicators (http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7015/5/30). Moreover, the survey response rate among selected experts was found to be below 1%. In other words, on the basis of possible selection biases alone, the validity of the measurement is shaky.” (See Panao, “Only Two RP Universities Made It…UP Newsletter, August 2007, p. 5.)

According to the statement, the other half of the index is based on such indicators as student-to faculty ratio, the number of foreign faculty and foreign students in the university, and the number of citations in internationally accredited publications. “Data for these indicators depend on the information that participating institutions submit. An institution’s index may be easily distorted if it fails to submit data for the pertinent indicators, or if it chooses not to participate.”

Blog EntryMy First International CallSep 8, '08 11:23 AM

Ooopppsss...

Sorry guys... This info isn't all about a call center... I just made my first international call this afternoon. What country? Well, that is obvious... South Korea.... in Busan...

Now... why?

I was just curious if  calling the companies in South Korea will make my application faster. I tried to call Su of an English Agency or something... I don't know if she is a recruiter but she can speak English it's just that it is so obvious that she is a Korean. They call it Konglish...

I just found out that whatever information they put in their posted messages for job hiring, that is final. In their job postings, it is said that an English Teachers that they will be hiring must be Native English Speakers. So that's what I thought. I called and I was just told that they are not accepting Filipinos. Shame on me... Trying hard... I just thought that there is no harm in trying. And I even checked my balance in my prepaid smart cellphone. And what the????!!!! It didn't change! Hmmmmm.... I'm hoping to try it again.... to call companies in Korea....

Blog EntryFly, Daddy, Fly!Sep 7, '08 11:33 PM
for everyone

Once again, a Korean Film made my day. Fly Daddy Fly, that's the title. I have

the DVD since 2007, I think.

I'm currently typing this thing inside the room where

my father is confined. Nasa probinsiya ako nito ah! Anong oras? It's almost

12AM. Sept.2 na. BER month na!

At first, I thought the movie was all about gangsters. But I was wrong. Usually

we'll see a teacher-student relationship is being built in a movie. The old man

being the teacher and the young as the student.

I can still

remember what my teacher told us in writing.

I was entertained on how Mun-Sik became thin while the movie progresses. At

first, you will see him as a weakling fat father. But you will question yourself

in the middle part of the movie if the protagonist in the middle is still the

same as in the first.

The movie definitely has the subject of a father.

At the climax, you will expect that Tae-Wook, the antagonist, and Moon-Sik will

have a fair battle.

while fighting Tae-Wook. The movie showed an unsual telling of story to the

audience.

Let's just put it this way, hindi kickboxer si Moon-Sik unlike the young Tae-Wook. He is just a salaryman as the movie keeps on telling the audience. He is just a

normal father and family man that will strive to work hard to pay their house

and other expenses.

The movie showed the vulnerability of Moon-Sik in terms of his seriousness in

his training. He is a father and a husband and he will try his best to protect

his family, to be a good father. When he found out that he was just being used

by the teenagers for bets, he really did become a cry baby while thinking that

what he was doing is all for his daughter.

Well, I think this is enough. I am already going to a deep critic of this film.

For all of you who are curious to watch this film, please do. For you will be

entertained and inspired.

Blog EntryKasalan sa ProbinsiyaMay 29, '08 2:50 AM
for everyone

E may pride ako... Kapal ng mukha no?

At so... may pride nga ako....since sobrang lapit ng bahay namin... umuwi ako... Nasa sariling bahay. Malamig pa ang tubig. Pakasaya sila sa kasalan!

A Hana Kimi OST by Tank -

We should stop wasting our energy in doing endless things
I will use my gaze to directly whisper my secrets to you
You never show a different expression
You're always smiling when you turn around and effortlessly solve the puzzle that I send to you

If this still doesn't count as understanding each other
at least it shows that we're both smart enough where

There's no need to ask why
There's no need to say anything
We get it
We understand
We have always been in love with each other
There's no need to worry
There's no need to be afraid
We're tired
We're asleep
We hold our hands and enter our dreams

I just copied the translation of this song from the DVD I bought in Quiapo. The lines, I can say, are beautiful. Try to read it while listening to the song...

Grabe... Baha to the max! Walang masakyan! Mainit! Umuulan!

First time ko sa Dad's. Hindi ako nahihiya. Bakit?

Ganun kasimple...

"VOYAGES: A Wonderful World of Music"
Madz Et Al Festival Series 2008
May 7 - 12, 2008 at Philamlife Auditorium, UN Avenue Manila

For the Madz et al festival series of 2008, we performed the following:

The Beatitudes - Traditional Russian Melody
Canto Negro - Xavier Montsalvatge
He's Got the Whole World in His Hands - Negro Spiritual

It was the first day for the VOYAGES concert. Together with Manila Chamber Singers, some of the choirs performed for the audience some of the International Songs. Here is the flow of the performances:

1. Milk Children's Choir conducted by Oscar Pantaleon
2. Woodrose Chorale conducted by Lala Kliatchko
3. Napocor Chorale conducted by Anna Tabita Abeleda-Piquero
4. Coro Cantabile conducted by Sharon Abesamis
5. Manila Chamber Singers conducted by Jose Emmanuel Aquino "JEDA"
6. UE Chorale conducted by Anna Tabita Abeleda-Piquero

Well, it was a tiring day for me especially i came from Paranaque for my raket. I didn't expect that I was able to arrive on time for the 10-minute sound check of our group. I was wearing my black pants and shoes already to lessen the hassle while with me was my coat i bought in SM for P1500 only, haha! On my way to MRT,  was making calls for our shoots in LIVING IT UP. It was really pain in the ass doing three tasks on the day of our performance. But anyway, it was a success! I can say that once again, I was part of the Madz Et Al performance of 2008.

Blog EntryHana Kimi (Taiwanese Version)Apr 19, '08 4:38 AM
for everyone

Finally I finished Hana Kimi after lending it to Abe. She even finished the drama first than me! How shameful! I bought that DVD pa naman sa Quiapo thinking that i would be watching it without sleeping.

Based from a manga, definitely from Japan, Taiwan made an unexpected hit TV series starred by good actors of the generation. I knew this fact months ago before releasing the teasers of the Japanese version on GMA 7 and the Taiwanese version on ABS-CBN. Taiwan made the series first in 2006. When it became a hit, Japan followed in 2007. When these two versions were popularized, Philippine networks bought the rights from the two countries. If I am going to be asked which version is good, I would go for the Taiwan's.

I told myself not to be affected by the dramas I watch. But then, Hana Kimi followed the footsteps of Xiangshin and Zhi Zou of It Started With A Kiss. I want to go to Taiwan! I changed my mind of going to South Korea. I want to see Rui Xi and Quan in person! Ano ba? Kayong mga drama kayo ah! Shit kayo! Hmmmm... I think I am sick. And this sickness is uncurable. Well, pano ba ako makakapunta dun e wala naman akong pera. I have lots of options actually that's why I took education and film after my undergrad studies. I have the option of being a teacher or a media practitioner after penetrating a foreign country. Yup! It's either Taiwan or South Korea lamang ang options ko. Options ko sila but that doesn't mean na limitado lamang ako sa two countries.

I am now thinking of going to Taiwan to teach there. I have the gutts because I have a license already. Hmmm... Good thing that I have a classmate/friend who has a connection to some of the schools there. I guess I have to talk to Sister Susan regarding this feeling. She's a Dominican Sister by the way and already taught in Taiwan for years. It's just that she is in Italy right now and I have no idea when will she return here. Well, I guess i have to buzz her YM. When we were still in UST, I already asked her what are my chances of getting a job there. She said that it would be 95%! Not bad right? But, the thing here is that I will be recieving a salary that is just like here in the Philippines. Hmmm... That's the catch. But there is also another catch she said, the living expenses there is not high. A good motivation for me to start working my application and papers. Haha!

for everyone

I was just killing the time. I was about to sleep when I felt like turning my notebook on. I checked each drive for possible infected files of virus. I browsed each folder when I saw the pictures of me and my Korean students. I was in a mood of reminiscing each moment that I had with them. Well, they have different characteristics but they have one thing in common, they are violent. AHAHAHA! Just kidding.

The most stunning picture that night that I saw was Juho's. I can still remember how the hell did I get a picture of him. It was a sunny morning back then. I was browsing his notebooks when he insisted to lend him my phone. I said no and he kept on insisting and even thretened me that he's going to tell me to his parents about something. "So what? You don't even know what you're gonna tell your parents about me. Ahahaha!!!!" i said. Ok, to make him in the mood to study, I lent my phone. He saw the VGA camera in my phone and told me to turn it on. Ok. So I did it. And that was it, he took pictures of himself. And who will ever think that I am gonna keep them? Yes, I erased all of them.

A year passed and I was teaching another student at that time already. I got myself to be fired by his mother because I wanted to. I just don't know what excuse will I make. Ok, to make it short, Richard, a student of mine, borrowed my phone. He browsed my folders of pictures and he just asked me why do I have a picture of Juho. And I said, "what the? I erased all of them already a year ago." Hmmmmm... Ahay!

I remembered that one day, Juho asked me to take a picture of him in exchange of listening to me in our class. Hay...
